Very Low Carb Diet
Summer is almost here and I’m actually thinking about losing some bodyfat. Over the course of the last year the body fat has piled on, mainly due to increased carbohydrate consumption due to the gout reducing my protein options and also reduced gym time (birth of baby on top of looking after a 2 year old).
This inspired me to search the internet for a decent resource for dropping weight, after much trawling I came across Shelby Starnes’ excellent new ebook on very low carb diets. I have not really looked at low carb diets before due my gout restricting a lot of protein foods but I am thinking of maybe using white fish as my protein source and see how that goes.
The actual ebook is a really good read and is a great resource of information from a man that knows how to diet and retain muscle mass. For those of you that don’t know Shelby is a top nutritionist and has also been involved heavily in powerlifting and bodybuilding circles. Basically he really knows his stuff.
The ebook starts by providing an overview on why hormones, metabolism effect weight loss and how you can possibly help this process RE: trying to manage insulin levels. At the same time there are tips on how to maintain good general health when consuming very low carbs such as using a fiber supplement. Protein charts, supplementation are all covered in this book. Shelby also goes into detail about cheats meals or as he calls them “refeeds” and how this helps sustain intense training and also advises on the best time of day to eat them. It is packed with little bits of advice that I wouldn’t have really thought about, for example limiting Calorie-free sweetners like Splenda – you need to buy the ebook for an explanation.
Overall I would give this e-book 8/10 - well worth the read if you are looking about losing some body fat.
